Our work

The APPG’s current work spans four topical streams, including the drivers of contemporary conflict, the protection of civilians in UK overseas operations, the evolving nature of the means and methods of warfare, including emerging technology, and defence transparency and oversight. These issues are rapidly outpacing conventional oversight mechanisms and safeguarding regimes within the UK and beyond and resulting in poor governance, rising civilian casualties, and other significant repercussions worldwide. To address these gaps, the APPG works through research and network collaboration to deliver insights that inform UK parliamentary decision-making across all Parties and both Houses on issues related to the UK’s consideration of and approach to issues of modern conflict and their governance.

Workstreams

  • Drivers of Conflict

Geopolitical shifts, economic instability, the environment, and societal resilience are driving change around the world— including in conflict. Understanding these changes can help to prevent, manage, and respond to crises and conflict worldwide.

  • Protection of Civilians

The nature of modern conflict poses unique risks to the safety and security of civilian populations. The UK and its Allies have a duty to protect civilians from harm resulting from military operations.

  • Means & Methods of Warfare

The rate of technological and tactical change. The role conventional tactics and weapons as well as new and emerging warfighting methods and technologies play on the battlefield is changing. However, these changes are quickly outpacing oversight.

  • Transparency & Oversight in Defence

Despite increased access to open-source information, the British public’s access to information about UK defence at home and abroad remains limited, particularly regarding the use of Special Forces and covert operations for overseas requirements in the absence of large-scale deployments.
